Most of the latest Volkswagen Group's three cylinder 1.0 TSI engines fitted to the above models will require a timing belt replacement.
Unlike most of the other Volkswagen group engines these engines do not have a recommended interval for replacing the water pump. The water pump on these three cylinder TSIengines is driven independently from the timing belt and reside on the opposite end of the crankshaft from the timing belt. Hence they do not require replacing when the timing belt is replaced.
When it comes to car maintenance, the all important timing belt/cambelt replacement is without doubt the most crucial serviceable components of your car’s engine. The timing belt/cambelt has an incredibly important job controlling the camshafts in the engine and keeps it running smoothly, if left unchanged and it breaks, it can seriously lighten your wallet.
Most VW engines have timing belt/cambelt replacement intervals between every 60,000 to 80,000 miles or 4 to 5 years [dependant on engine type]. Your service book should state the correct details.
Its vital that you replace your timing belt/cambelt as going over the manufacturers’ recommendation can lead to a slipped or snapped belt. In many cases this requires a new engine or engine build costing hundreds if not thousands of pounds.
