BMW XDRIVE Transfer Box Malfunction

January 11, 2017

BMW XDRIVE Transfer Box Malfunction

The 4×4 warning light, ABS and traction control deactivated indicators came on all at once for this 2011 E84 BMW X1. This customer has also been getting drivetrain vibrations and juddering on acceleration. PSC Autocentre is well versed in repairs on BMW drivetrain and will be evaluating the xDrive system.

WHAT IS BMW XDRIVE?

BMW xDrive is a full-time all-wheel drive system with the transfer case being the core component. The transfer case works by directing power from the transmission to both the front and rear differentials. xDrive can make a trip on snowy roads an easier time on you and your car.

BMW xDrive is found on the BMW X1, X3, X5, and X6 crossover sport activity vehicles. It is also optional on the 1 Series, 2 series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, and 7 Series

We’ve determined that the transfer case assembly has failed internally due to a failed chain and has a stored fault code 5F3A Transfer Case Malfunction. A complete case replacement is in order which comes with a new actuator motor.

With all-wheel drive back in order, this X1 is now ready for any blizzard.

TRANSFER CASE MAINTENANCE

We recommend performing the transfer case oil change every 60,000 miles. This service consists of draining out the old gear oil and replenishing the transfer case with approved BMW long life gear oil TF0870. We then perform the transfer case adaptations which is resetting the oil wear values in the VTG module.
